Atty. Christian Jay Millena Reflects on Life, Loss, and Gratitude During Emotional Birthday Celebration
Ipil. Zamboanga Sibugay – There was hardly a dry eye in the audience as Provincial Administrator Atty. Christian Jay Millena delivered a deeply personal and emotional message during his birthday celebration held Monday evening, July 27, at the GTH Compound in Barangay Kitabog, Titay.
What began as a joyous gathering of government officials, colleagues, family, and friends became an evening of reflection as Millena opened his heart about his humble beginnings, the value of life, and the reasons he has come to appreciate celebrating birthdays.
The emotional highlight of the evening came when video messages from his family in his hometown were shown. Seeing and hearing their heartfelt greetings, particularly from his son, visibly moved the provincial administrator, who paused several times as he struggled to hold back tears before addressing the audience.
Millena shared that despite celebrating another year of life, he never really grew up placing much importance on birthdays.
Coming from a poor family, he said birthdays, Christmas, New Year, and other occasions were treated like ordinary days because there was simply not enough to celebrate. He recalled that he did not even have his very first birthday cake until 2010, when he was already working.

He also reminisced about his difficult journey as a working student while studying law at the University of the Philippines Diliman, describing how perseverance and determination helped him overcome financial hardships in pursuit of becoming a lawyer.
Reflecting on his life, Millena said his perspective on birthdays changed after experiencing the loss of several loved ones, particularly his sisters. Witnessing death within the family made him realize how fragile life is and how every birthday is more than just another year. It is a reminder that life is a blessing that should never be taken for granted.
He said the experience taught him to treasure every opportunity to be with family and friends, emphasizing that life is short and every moment shared with loved ones is a gift.
Millena also spoke candidly about his role in public service. He acknowledged that when he assumed office as Provincial Administrator, he understood that not everyone appreciated his management style.
He explained that his decisions have always been guided by one principle -that public funds are the people's money and should be spent responsibly. He said government officials have the duty to ensure that every peso entrusted to them produces concrete results that genuinely benefit the public.
Despite the pressures and responsibilities of government service, Millena said he remains grounded because of the people around him, especially his badminton friends.
He fondly shared that on the badminton court, he is simply another player. There is no special treatment because of his position. Like everyone else, he waits for his turn to play, joking that the only advantage he has is getting to play first sometimes because he usually brings the shuttlecocks.
The lighthearted story drew laughter from the audience while underscoring the importance of maintaining humility despite holding a high-ranking government position.
Millena expressed his heartfelt gratitude to everyone who organized the celebration, giving special thanks to Ipil Mayor Ramses Troy Olegario, whom he credited for helping make the gathering possible. He likewise thanked his family, colleagues, close friends, and everyone who took time to celebrate with him.
Among those present were Atty. Liza Gonzales, Vice Governor Richard Olegario, Board Member Vic Javier, Board Member Jung Yanga, Brig. Gen. Samuel Yunque, Brigade Commander, Zamboanga Sibugay Police Provincial Director Col. Barnard Dasugo, municipal and barangay officials, provincial government employees, barangay captains, members of the badminton community, and other close friends.
For many of those in attendance, the celebration became more than a birthday party. It was an intimate glimpse into the life of a public servant whose journey from poverty and personal loss to public service has been shaped by resilience, gratitude, and a steadfast commitment to serving the people.
