A Father’s Day Tribute to Solo Mothers

Daphne Santuyo

Father’s Day is a celebration of presence. The steady hands that provide, the voices that guide, the strength that protects. It honors men who choose to stay, to build, and to raise their children with responsibility and love.

And they deserve to be honored.

But beyond the celebration is a quieter reality, one that unfolds daily in many Filipino homes. It is the life of a solo mother.

Not the idealized version. Not the romanticized strength. But the real, unfiltered, often exhausting truth.

These are women who did not just “step up". They absorbed everything.

They became the sole income earner in households where one income was never meant to be enough. They budget every peso, stretch every meal, delay every personal need. School fees, medicines, electricity........every responsibility lands on one pair of shoulders.

There are no shifts. No one to alternate with. No fallback. No days off.

When a child gets sick in the middle of the night, they are the ones who stay awake and still report to work the next morning. When decisions need to be made, they carry the weight of consequences alone. There is no partner to consult, no one to say, “Ikaw muna.”

And in the middle of all this, they are expected to remain emotionally present.

They must listen, guide, discipline, encourage, and nurture without letting their own fears spill over. They carry anxieties about the future: tuition, safety, opportunities their children might miss. Many silently question if what they are giving is ever enough.

Because the truth is, many of them are raising children while grieving something at the same time. A broken relationship. A lost partner. A life they once imagined.

And yet, despite the emotional and financial strain, they continue to choose their children over rest, over ease, over themselves.

They turn down opportunities that would take them away from home. They postpone dreams, careers, even relationships. Not because they lack ambition, but because their priorities have been rewritten by necessity.

Their sacrifices are not one-time decisions. They are daily negotiations.

Do I buy this for myself, or for my child? Do I rest, or take on another job? Do I admit I’m tired, or stay strong a little longer?

And most days, they choose their children.

This is not just strength, it is sustained, relentless endurance.

At the same time, this reality should not erase the importance of fathers who do their part - those who remain present, involved, and accountable. Responsible fathers are essential, and their active role in raising children is something that should never be minimized. When fathers show up, families are stronger.

But when they don’t or when circumstances remove them, the gap does not disappear.

Someone fills it.

And more often than not, it is the mother.

Not because she was prepared. Not because it was fair. But because there was no other choice.

So this Father’s Day, while we celebrate the men who fulfill their roles with integrity and love, we also recognize a different kind of parenthood, one that carries both roles, often without acknowledgment.

To the solo mothers who provide, protect, decide, discipline, and nurture all at once…

To those who give even when they are depleted…

To those who have quietly surrendered parts of their lives so their children could have more…

You are seen.

Because in the absence of one, you became both.

And that is not just sacrifice.

That is a lifetime of choosing love, over and over again.
