First Triathlon in Malangas Draws Athletes from Across the Region, Boosts Local Tourism

Ipil, Zamboanga Sibugay - The first-ever Maralag Triathlon in the Municipality of Malangas took place on January 24, 2026, marking a new chapter in the town’s growing sports and tourism calendar as participants from different parts of the region converged to compete in the historic event.

Organized as part of the Maralag Celebration2026, the event brought together triathletes both seasoned and first-time competitors in a celebration of endurance, fitness, and community spirit. Participants were welcomed to the municipality with a welcome dinner held at the Forestancia Wavepool Resort, setting the tone for camaraderie and excitement ahead of the race.

The triathlon, hosted by The Local Government Unit of Malangas, featured rigorous swim, bike, and run legs that challenged competitors’ stamina and showcased the scenic landscapes of Malangas. Its staging is expected to boost the municipality’s tourism industry by highlighting Malangas as an emerging destination for sports enthusiasts and visitors alike.

Earlier this week, the Local Government Unit (LGU) of Malangas held the soft opening of Forestancia Wavepool Resort, the first wave pool in the Zamboanga Peninsula, further strengthening the town’s tourism offerings and enhancing attractions for residents and visitors.

Mayor Apple Cabilao Yambao expressed pride in the successful staging of the triathlon and its potential impact on tourism and local economic growth. In her statement on the official Facebook page of the municipality, she highlighted the collective effort of organizers, athletes, and the community in bringing the event to life. She also noted that another LGU-owned resort, located in front of Malangas Boulevard, is set to open soon, adding to the town’s growing roster of leisure destinations and further supporting its tourism push.

The first triathlon in Malangas not only served as a competitive sporting event but also as a catalyst for community engagement and regional visibility, reinforcing the municipality’s commitment to expanding its tourism profile and fostering a vibrant, active lifestyle among residents and visitors alike.
