Ipil’s First-Ever Christmas Carnival Draws Record-Breaking Crowd
Ipil, Zamboanga Sibugay — The town of Ipil erupted in festive energy last night as the first-ever Christmas Carnival in Zamboanga Sibugay officially opened, drawing what many described as the biggest crowd the municipality has ever seen.
Families with children, groups of friends, and visitors from neighboring towns flocked to the open field where the carnival grounds were set up. The turnout was so overwhelming that many attendees chose to head home earlier than planned as the venue became “super crowded,” with some describing it as “shoulder-to-shoulder” throughout the evening.
The huge influx of people also caused heavy traffic along the national highway, with vehicles moving slowly for hours as carnival-goers streamed in. Despite the congestion, the atmosphere remained upbeat as excitement filled the air.
The opening night featured a lively performance by Don Petok, whose music energized the already exuberant crowd. A colorful fireworks display lit up the sky shortly after, earning cheers from families and children who watched from every corner of the packed grounds.

Adding to the festive atmosphere were booths and displays from local businesses offering food, handcrafted merchandise, and souvenir items. Many stall owners said the Christmas Carnival provides a rare opportunity for small entrepreneurs to earn significantly from the massive crowd. They noted that participation is especially accessible this year, with the municipality waiving rental fees for all vendors. Only those requiring electricity for freezers or similar equipment are asked to pay minimal utility charges, making the event an even more welcome boost for local livelihood.
Mayor Ramses Troy Olegario, who officially opened the event, expressed joy at seeing the community come together in such large numbers. He encouraged residents and visitors alike to enjoy the carnival throughout the season. “This is a celebration for all Sibugaynons. We invite everyone to come, experience, and create joyful memories with family and friends,” he said.
2nd District Representative Doc Marly Hofer-Hasim also joined the celebration, and her presence further energized the crowd, drawing cheers and adding to the excitement of the night.
The mayor admitted they did not anticipate such a massive crowd on opening night—though he shared that he had prayed for it. He described the turnout as a historic moment for Ipil and a clear sign of how deeply the community has longed for shared celebrations.
The Christmas Carnival is expected to run throughout the holiday season, with more performances and activities scheduled in the coming weeks.
