Proposed Irrigation Project for Zamboanga Sibugay’s 1st District Moves Forward After NIA Meeting

Ipil, Zamboanga Sibugay – Efforts to strengthen agricultural productivity in the First District of Zamboanga Sibugay gained fresh momentum following a recent coordination meeting between local officials and the National Irrigation Administration (NIA) Region IX.

1st District Representative Atty. Marlo C. Bancoro reported a productive discussion held on Friday, June 26, 2026, with key NIA officials aimed at advancing a proposed irrigation project designed to improve water access for farmlands in the district.

Present during the meeting were Engr. Rey M. Pinatacan, Acting Engineering and Operations Division (EOD) Manager of NIA Region IX, and Ms. Ana Rachel C. Dahan, Assistant Irrigation Management Office (IMO) Manager.

The proposed initiative is expected to enhance existing irrigation systems, expand coverage to more farming communities, and ensure a more reliable water supply for agricultural lands, an intervention seen as crucial in boosting crop yields and supporting local farmers.

According to stakeholders, the project is part of broader efforts to modernize agricultural infrastructure in Zamboanga Sibugay and address long-standing concerns of farmers regarding irrigation access, especially during dry seasons.

Officials emphasized that improved irrigation systems could significantly increase agricultural productivity, stabilize farm income, and strengthen food security in the province, where farming remains one of the primary sources of livelihood.

Further technical discussions and site assessments are expected to follow as the proposal moves into the next stages of planning and validation.

Local farmers and stakeholders are also expected to be consulted as part of the continuing process to ensure that the project aligns with ground-level needs and priorities.

The initiative underscores ongoing collaboration between the government and the agriculture sector to support rural development and improve the quality of life of farming communities in the First District.
