First-Ever Overpass in Zamboanga Sibugay Set for Turnover on July 24

IPIL, Zamboanga Sibugay — A project that has long been awaited by residents is finally set to become a reality as the first-ever pedestrian overpass in the Province of Zamboanga Sibugay will be formally turned over to the Municipality of Ipil on July 24, 2026, in time for the celebration of the town's 77th Araw ng Ipil.

The announcement was made by Second District Representative Dr. Marly Hofer-Hasim, who disclosed that the project is now ready for turnover after undergoing several design enhancements to improve both safety and functionality.

The overpass, constructed along one of Ipil's busiest sections of the national highway, is expected to provide a safer passage for thousands of pedestrians, including students, workers, commuters, and residents who cross the road daily.

The project traces its roots to the administration of former Second District Representative Tata Eudela, who originally conceptualized and initiated the construction of the pedestrian overpass as part of efforts to improve public safety and urban mobility in the municipality.

When Hofer-Hasim assumed office, she revisited the original design and introduced several modifications aimed at making the structure more practical, sustainable, and responsive to the community's needs.

One of the most significant changes was the removal of the planned roof covering the overpass. Hofer-Hasim explained that the decision was made to discourage the structure from becoming a sleeping area or a place where people might loiter, which could eventually lead to sanitation and maintenance concerns.

Rather than constructing a roof over the overpass, the allocated funds were redirected toward the construction of a covered waiting shed beneath the structure, providing commuters with a more functional and comfortable area while waiting for public transportation.

She also ordered revisions to the stairway exits to improve pedestrian safety by ensuring users have better visibility and safer access when entering and leaving the overpass.

The infrastructure is expected to significantly reduce the risks faced by pedestrians crossing the busy highway while promoting safer traffic movement in one of Ipil's busiest commercial corridors.

The completed overpass will be formally turned over to the Municipality of Ipil, with Mayor Ramses Troy Olegario expected to receive the facility on behalf of the local government during the turnover ceremony on July 24.
