NCAA and UAAP Champions Set to Clash in Zamboanga Sibugay’s 25th Anniversary Basketball Showdown
IPIL ZAMBOANGA SIBUGAY - Basketball fans across Mindanao are in for a thrilling treat as top collegiate champions from the NCAA and UAAP converge in the province for the Gov. Ann K. Hofer Open Invitational Basketball Tournament 2026, one of the major highlights of the 25th Araw ng Zamboanga Sibugay celebration.
Vice Governor Richard “Ric-ric” Olegario promised an electrifying tournament, describing this year’s edition as one of the most competitive and exciting yet. He revealed that five powerhouse teams, including reigning champions from both the UAAP and NCAA, will compete—bringing championship-level basketball straight to Sibugay.
“This will truly be a clash of champions,” Olegario said, adding that the tournament reflects the province’s growing reputation as a rising basketball hub in Mindanao.
The tournament will be held from February 17 to 21, 2026, featuring the following teams:
• San Beda Red Lions – NCAA Champions
• UP Fighting Maroons – UAAP Champions
• De La Salle Green Archers – Former UAAP Champions and 2nd Gov. Ann Invitational Champions (2024)
• Zamboanga Valientes – 3rd Gov. Ann Invitational Champions (2025)
• Alicia Team – 1st Gov. Ann Invitational Champions (2023)

A substantial prize pool awaits the winners, with ₱800,000 for the champion, ₱500,000 for second place, ₱300,000 for third place, ₱200,000 for fourth place and ₱10,000 for the tournament’s Most Valuable Player (MVP).
The Vice Governor further added that, consistent with previous years, the Provincial Local Government Unit (PLGU) subsidized the expenses of all participating teams, a move aimed at encouraging top-caliber teams to compete and bringing high-level basketball action to Zamboanga Sibugay.
Aside from the Open Invitational, the provincial government has also lined up two additional basketball categories designed to highlight and develop local talents. These include an inter-municipality basketball tournament, as well as a mixed category featuring inter-municipality municipal and barangay officials, ensuring wider community participation and grassroots development.
With national champions, seasoned contenders, and hometown heroes all sharing the spotlight, the basketball events promise high-intensity games fueled by pride, passion, and community spirit.
As Zamboanga Sibugay celebrates its silver anniversary, the province is set to showcase not only its rich history but also its growing prominence in sports, affirming its place as a dynamic and competitive basketball destination in Mindanao.
