Powerful Waves Destroy Homes in Payao, Families Left With Nothing

Ipil, Zamboanga Sibugay - Several families in Barangay Lumantik, Payao, Zamboanga Sibugay were left homeless after powerful waves battered the coastal community on Saturday, July 11, destroying houses and sweeping away belongings.

Residents said the strong waves struck the shoreline with such force that several homes sustained heavy damage, leaving families with little or no time to salvage their personal possessions.

According to initial reports, many affected residents were unable to save any of their belongings as seawater and strong waves quickly engulfed their houses.

The incident displaced several families, who are now relying on the assistance of local authorities, relatives, and concerned individuals while assessing the extent of the damage.

Local officials have begun monitoring the affected community and are expected to conduct a damage assessment to determine the number of families affected and the assistance needed.

The incident comes as weather disturbances continue to affect parts of the country, bringing rough sea conditions to several coastal areas. Authorities have repeatedly advised fishermen and residents living along coastlines to remain vigilant and closely monitor weather advisories, especially amid the threat posed by Super Typhoon Inday and the enhanced southwest monsoon, which may generate strong winds and dangerous waves even in areas outside the direct path of the cyclone.

Residents in vulnerable coastal communities are likewise urged to heed evacuation advisories whenever necessary to ensure their safety.

As of this writing, no casualties or injuries have been reported. Local disaster response teams continue to monitor the situation while coordinating assistance for the affected families.
