Gary Granada Conducts Music Workshops in Malangas-Inspires Local Talent
Ipil, Zamboanga Sibugay — Renowned Filipino composer and musician Gary Granada held a series of workshops in the Municipality of Malangas this week, engaging aspiring artists, students and teachers in sessions designed to nurture local musical talent.
The workshops were divided into two parts:
1. The first workshop, held on December 6, 2025 in Malangas Budget Hotel intended for teachers, focused on the relationship between Society and Music, exploring how music can reflect social realities, influence communities, and enhance education.
2. The second workshop conducted the next day, December 7, centered on Songwriting, divided into lyric writing and melody-making sessions. This part of the workshop was limited to 30 participants, providing an intimate, hands-on experience where aspiring songwriters could receive personalized guidance from Granada.
Granada, known for his socially relevant songs and decades-long contribution to Filipino music, emphasized the importance of music as a tool for self-expression, cultural preservation, and community engagement. Participants were encouraged to create original works reflecting their experiences and local heritage.

“The goal is not just to teach notes or melodies, but to help these young artists find their own voices and use music to tell their stories,” Granada said.
Mayor Apple Cabilao Yambao expressed her gratitude for the opportunity to host Granada’s workshops, highlighting how such initiatives enrich the musical consciousness of the community and inspire the youth to embrace creativity.
In line with fostering local talent, Malangas is also launching a songwriting competition to create the official Malangas Hymn, inviting residents to participate and contribute to the town’s cultural identity through music.
The workshops drew students, teachers, and local musicians, many of whom expressed appreciation for the rare chance to learn directly from one of the country’s most respected composers.
Organizers hope to continue similar initiatives to promote arts and culture in Malangas and throughout Zamboanga Sibugay, cultivating creativity and community pride.
