IPIL, Zamboanga Sibugay -The Province of Zamboanga Sibugay is set to take center stage in the country’s cave conservation and eco-tourism efforts after being officially selected to host the next National Cave Congress, following the successful staging of the 2026 gathering in Mabinay, Negros Oriental.

During the recently concluded 21st National Cave Congress held from April 9 to 13, 2026, in Mabinay, dubbed the “Caves Capital of the Philippines”, Zamboanga Sibugay formally accepted the responsibility of hosting the next edition of the prestigious national event.

Representing the province, Mr. Marc Mentens received the hosting mantle in a symbolic turnover ceremony attended by cave experts, environmental advocates, tourism stakeholders, and spelunking enthusiasts from across the country.

Zamboanga Sibugay was chosen as the next host following a competitive selection process that also drew bids from Bohol and Agusan. However, organizers and delegates were said to be highly impressed by Sibugay’s strong presentation, leading the other contenders to yield and extend their full support for the province’s hosting.

The National Cave Congress, organized by the Philippine Speleological Society (PSS), is considered the largest annual gathering of cave practitioners in the Philippines. The five-day event in Mabinay featured a comprehensive lineup of activities, including technical discussions on cave management, conservation strategies, cave rescue operations, and sustainable tourism development.

Participants also engaged in actual cave explorations and fieldwork, reinforcing practical knowledge while highlighting the importance of preserving fragile cave ecosystems. The congress carried a central theme focused on karst landscapes, cave protection, and responsible tourism-key issues that resonate with provinces rich in natural cave resources.

As the incoming host, Zamboanga Sibugay is expected to build on these discussions while showcasing its own unique cave systems and eco-tourism potential. Provincial officials view the opportunity not only as a recognition of Sibugay’s growing role in environmental stewardship but also as a platform to boost tourism, local economy, and awareness on conservation.

The upcoming congress is expected to draw hundreds of participants nationwide, including scientists, environmentalists, policy-makers, and adventure tourism advocates, placing Zamboanga Sibugay firmly on the map as a key destination for cave exploration and conservation in the Philippines.

With the successful turnover, anticipation is now building as stakeholders prepare to welcome the country’s leading cave experts and enthusiasts for what is expected to be another milestone event in the province’s tourism and environmental initiatives.
