Navy Halts ₱234 Million Illegal Cigarette Shipment in Maritime Operation off Zamboanga Sibugay
Ipil, Zamboanga Sibugay — The Naval Command Western Mindanao (NCWM) has foiled another suspected smuggling attempt after seizing more than ₱234.3 million worth of foreign-brand cigarettes during a maritime security operation in the waters off Lutangan Island, Olutanga, Zamboanga Sibugay on July 19, 2026.
The operation led to the confiscation of 1,436 master cases and 55 reams of New Berlin and Bosqu cigarettes, which authorities believe were being transported through the area’s maritime routes without proper authorization. The motorboat used to carry the shipment was also taken into custody.
The confiscated cigarette products and the seized vessel were later turned over to the Bureau of Customs–Port of Zamboanga for proper processing, investigation, and disposition in accordance with existing laws.

The interception represents a major setback for illegal trade networks operating in the region, preventing the possible distribution of large quantities of untaxed tobacco products that could deprive the government of millions in revenue and affect legitimate businesses.
NCWM said the successful operation demonstrates its continuing commitment to securing Western Mindanao’s waters against smuggling and other maritime-related offenses. The command has intensified surveillance and enforcement efforts to prevent criminal groups from exploiting coastal areas for unlawful activities.
Led by Rear Admiral Constancio Arturo M. Reyes Jr., PN, the Naval Command Western Mindanao reiterated its resolve to protect the country’s maritime borders and safeguard economic interests.
The command warned that maritime routes in Western Mindanao will continue to be closely monitored, as authorities remain committed to pursuing individuals and groups involved in illegal trade and other activities that threaten regional security.
