Community Dialogue Counters Alleged Illegal Recruitment in Basilan
Ipil, Zamboanga Sibugay, April 19, 2026- A community meeting aimed at addressing peace and order concerns was convened on Saturday in Barangay Kapatagan Grande, bringing together local officials, security forces, and community leaders amid reports of alleged illegal recruitment activities in the area.
The dialogue, locally known as a pulong-pulong, was facilitated by the 6th Special Forces (Lionheart) Battalion under the leadership of Lt. Col. Geoffrey A. Fabros. It was spearheaded by Isabela City Administrator Peter Eisma and hosted at the residence of Barangay Chairman Jehar Sahibul.
Central to the discussion were claims circulating within communities about a group identifying itself as “MNLF Combatants,” allegedly recruiting individuals with promises of integration into the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP). According to information raised during the meeting, the group reportedly entices recruits to proceed to MNLF Camp Salamat in Barangay Masola, where they are told they will receive formal military training under Special Forces personnel.
The 6th Special Forces Battalion firmly refuted these claims, describing them as “entirely baseless and misleading.” Military officials clarified that the unit has no authority or mandate to recruit or train members of any non-state armed group, emphasizing that such assertions are false and potentially harmful.

Authorities also expressed concern over reports that certain individuals may be exploiting the situation by soliciting money from prospective recruits under false pretenses. Officials warned that such acts constitute deception and could put vulnerable individuals at risk. The meeting provided a platform for open dialogue and coordination among stakeholders, reinforcing the importance of accurate information and community vigilance. Participants underscored the need for strengthened collaboration to counter misinformation and maintain peace and stability in the area.
Also present during the activity were Police Senior Master Sergeant Jessel Ben F. Santua, SWAT Team Leader; Police Executive Master Sergeant Suaib A. Ascali Jr. of the City Exploitation Section; Barangay Masola Chairwoman Nurmina Munjalal; and MNLF Commander Potoy Kijal of Camp Salamat, along with his members.
Local leaders highlighted that sustained communication, unity, and mutual respect remain key to fostering resilience and ensuring the safety of communities in Basilan.
