Bill Seeks Creation of Medical School in Zamboanga Sibugay

IPIL, ZAMBOANGA SIBUGAY - A significant boost to healthcare education and public health services in the province is underway following the filing of House Bill No. 7071, which seeks the establishment of the Zamboanga Sibugay College of Medicine.

The measure was formally filed in the House of Representatives by Congresswoman Dr. Marly Hofer-Hasim, a physician-legislator, in a bid to address the long-standing shortage of doctors in the province and improve access to quality medical education for local students.

According to Rep. Hofer-Hasim, the proposed college is envisioned to open opportunities for deserving and qualified students from Zamboanga Sibugay and nearby provinces who often face financial and logistical barriers in pursuing medical studies outside the region.

“This is about investing in our people and our future,” Hofer-Hasim said. “By bringing a College of Medicine to Zamboanga Sibugay, we are opening doors for our young dreamers and strengthening our healthcare system, especially for our far-flung and underserved areas.”

She emphasized that producing homegrown doctors is a sustainable solution to the province’s healthcare challenges, noting that medical professionals who are trained locally are more likely to serve and remain in their communities.

Under the proposed measure, the Zamboanga Sibugay College of Medicine will operate in coordination with an existing state university in the province and partner closely with government hospitals and health facilities. This arrangement will allow medical students to undergo hands-on clinical training while simultaneously improving the delivery of healthcare services at the local level.

Once established, the college is expected to play a critical role in strengthening the province’s healthcare workforce, enhancing medical services, and contributing to long-term improvements in public health outcomes.

The bill is currently undergoing the legislative process in the House of Representatives. If approved, it will mark a major milestone in Zamboanga Sibugay’s efforts to build a more resilient, accessible, and community-centered healthcare system.
