Province Ramps Up Aid for Flood-Hit Communities in Imelda

IPIL, Zamboanga Sibugay — The provincial government of Zamboanga Sibugay has intensified its relief operations for residents affected by widespread flooding in the Municipality of Imelda, with assistance efforts continuing across several barangays.

At least 9 barangays, including Balugo, Gandiangan, Población, San Jose, Sta. Barbara, Lumpanac, La Victoria, Lower Baluran, and Lumbog, were affected by the flooding, impacting close to 5,000 individuals. Hundreds of families were forced to evacuate as floodwaters inundated homes and communities.

Information from the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO), led by Rodel Tubigon Acting PDRRMO, indicated that immediate response measures were carried out to address the urgent needs of displaced residents. This included the provision of food and other essential assistance to evacuees, particularly those staying in temporary shelters.

Under the leadership of Governor Ann, the provincial government mobilized resources to support affected municipalities, ensuring that aid is delivered where it is most needed. A strategic and coordinated distribution system was implemented to complement local government efforts and ensure timely delivery of aid to priority areas.

In accordance with Republic Act 10121, or the Philippine Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Act, the province steps in to augment assistance, especially in situations where multiple municipalities are affected and require coordinated support.

Alongside relief distribution, the provincial government underscored the importance of accurate field assessment. Efforts have been strengthened to ensure that Rapid Damage Assessment and Needs Analysis (RDANA) is conducted through actual on-the-ground validation, allowing for a more responsive and targeted intervention.

Authorities continue to monitor the situation as weather disturbances persist, with assurance that the provincial government remains ready to extend further assistance to safeguard affected communities and help them recover from the impact of the flooding.
