IPIL, ZAMBOANGA SIBUGAY (March 24, 2026) - Classes at Zamboanga Peninsula Polytechnic State University (ZPPSU) in Zamboanga City were officially suspended on Tuesday following a fire that broke out at the RAC Building within the Lot-2 Laboratory area of the campus.

The suspension of classes was announced by ZPPSU Vice President Cyrus Pil Cadavedo, emphasizing that the decision was made to ensure the safety and well-being of students, faculty, and non-teaching personnel while authorities assess the extent of the incident.

According to initial reports, the fire originated in one of the laboratory sections of the RAC Building, a facility used for academic and technical training. The blaze prompted immediate concern due to the presence of laboratory equipment and materials, which may have contributed to the rapid spread of the fire.

Personnel from the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) responded promptly to the incident and were able to contain and control the fire, preventing it from spreading to adjacent buildings and other parts of the campus. No casualties or injuries have been reported as of this writing.

Authorities have launched a thorough investigation to determine the cause of the fire, including whether electrical malfunction, equipment failure, or other factors may have contributed to the incident. The BFP is also working to assess the extent of structural damage and estimate the total cost of losses, particularly to laboratory equipment and facilities.

University officials have advised students, faculty, and staff to remain vigilant and await further announcements regarding the resumption of classes, office operations, and other academic activities. They also assured the public that safety inspections and necessary measures will be undertaken before normal operations resume.

The incident highlights the importance of strict safety protocols, particularly in laboratory environments, as the university works closely with authorities to ensure that all facilities remain safe for use moving forward.
