IPIL, Zamboanga Sibugay - In anticipation of possible increases in the prices of basic commodities, the Local Government Unit (LGU) of Ipil, led by Mayor Ramses Troy Olegario, has taken proactive steps to safeguard the welfare of consumers.

Earlier today, the Local Price Coordinating Council (LPCC) convened at the Mayor’s Office Conference Room to discuss measures aimed at ensuring fair pricing and protecting the public from potential overpricing and market abuse. The meeting brought together key department heads of the LGU, along with representatives from the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), the Municipal Agriculture and Fisheries Council (MAFC), and the Ipil Market Vendors Multi-Purpose Cooperative (IMAVEMCO).

During the meeting, participants reviewed key provisions of Republic Act No. 7581, also known as the Price Act, including policies on price monitoring, fair trade laws enforcement, and consumer protection mechanisms. Discussions also covered the implementation of programs such as Timbangan ng Bayan, Operation Timbangan, and other initiatives aimed at ensuring transparency and fairness in market transactions.

One of the major outcomes of the meeting was the unanimous agreement to install a Price Billboard at the Ipil Public Market. The proposed billboard will serve as a public reference for prevailing prices of basic commodities, enabling consumers to stay informed and empowering them to make better purchasing decisions. It is also expected to discourage unscrupulous practices by ensuring that vendors adhere to standard pricing guidelines.

In addition, authorities agreed to intensify inspections of warehouses and storage facilities within the municipality. These inspections aim to prevent unjustified price increases, particularly on essential goods such as rice, including monitoring the sale of older stock that may be subject to improper price adjustments.

Mayor Olegario emphasized the importance of strong coordination among government agencies and stakeholders, especially in times of economic uncertainty. He underscored that preparedness and vigilance are key to maintaining stability in the local market and protecting the interests of the public.

The initiative reflects the LGU’s commitment to transparency, accountability, and consumer welfare, ensuring that the people of Ipil are not left vulnerable amid potential fluctuations in commodity prices.
