₱6.4-M Worth of Smuggled Cigarettes Seized in Titay; One Suspect Nabbed
IPIL, Zamboanga Sibugay (May 29, 2026) — Law enforcement authorities seized over ₱6.4 million worth of illicit cigarettes and apprehended a suspect during a joint anti-smuggling operation conducted in Titay, Zamboanga Sibugay on Thursday, May 28.
The operation, carried out by virtue of a search warrant, was spearheaded by the Zamboanga Sibugay Maritime Police Station (ZS MARPSTA) in coordination with the Regional Special Operations Task Group of the Regional Maritime Unit 9 (RSOT RMU9), Titay Municipal Police Station, Regional Intelligence Unit 9 (RIU9), and the Provincial Intelligence Unit (PIU).
The search was executed at a warehouse owned by an adult male suspect, where authorities uncovered and confiscated assorted illegal cigarettes valued at ₱6,418,224.00.
The suspect was arrested on-site and properly informed of his rights under the Miranda Doctrine and the Anti-Torture Law in a language he understood. He was then taken to the Zamboanga Sibugay Maritime Police Station for documentation and processing prior to the filing of charges for violating Republic Act 10643, also known as the Graphic Health Warnings Law.

Provincial Director PCOL Barnard Danie V. Dasugo lauded the joint efforts of the operating units, describing the successful raid as proof of strengthened coordination among law enforcement agencies in addressing illegal trade in the province.
“This operation reflects the strong commitment and cooperation of our law enforcement units in curbing the spread of illicit cigarettes,” Dasugo said. “We will continue to intensify our efforts to safeguard the public and ensure that those who violate the law are held accountable.”
Authorities reaffirmed their resolve to sustain aggressive campaigns against smuggling and the illegal distribution of tobacco products, noting their negative impact on government revenue and public health.
Further investigation is underway to trace the origin and distribution network of the seized contraband.
