Ipil, Zamboanga Sibugay, April 17, 2026 -Authorities have launched a full investigation into a tragic domestic incident in a coastal barangay of Sumisip that left two family members dead and another critically injured.

Initial reports from the Philippine National Police identified the suspect as a 47-year-old fisherman who allegedly attacked members of his own family using a bladed weapon inside their home.

The assault resulted in the deaths of a mother and her young daughter, while another child sustained serious injuries. The suspect later died after inflicting a fatal wound on himself, authorities said.

Personnel from the Sumisip Municipal Police Station responded immediately after receiving the report from a barangay official. Officers secured the scene, recovered the weapon used in the attack, and coordinated emergency medical assistance for the victims.

The injured child was first brought to Sumisip District Hospital before being transferred to Zamboanga City for advanced medical treatment. Meanwhile, the remains of the fatalities have been turned over to their family for burial preparations.

Police said initial information suggests the suspect may have been dealing with mental health issues, which could have contributed to the incident. However, authorities emphasized that a thorough investigation is ongoing to determine the full circumstances and possible motives.

Jakaria J. Muin, chief of the Sumisip Municipal Police Station, condemned the incident and assured the public that all angles are being examined. “Our personnel immediately responded to secure the area and provide assistance. We are coordinating with local officials and the victims’ families to fully understand what happened,” Muin said.

Authorities are also working closely with the barangay and relevant agencies to prevent similar incidents, urging the public to remain vigilant and report any unusual or concerning behavior within their communities.
